VEHICLES: Black 2002 Chevrolet Blazer
DRIVERS: Deana L. Smith, Age 49, of Stonefort, Illinois
PASSENGERS: Darryl G. Smith, Age 50, of Stonefort, Illinois
SEATBELTS: Deana L. Smith – No, Darryl G. Smith - No
CAUSE: Crash remains under investigation.
TRANSPORTS: Saline County Ambulance Service / LifeFlight (Darryl G. Smith)
CONDITIONS: Deana L. Smith - Fatality, Darryl G. Smith - Fatality
PRELIMINARY: According to the preliminary traffic crash investigation, the driver (Deana L. Smith) of the black 2002 Chevrolet Blazer was traveling southbound on Illinois 145, approximately .25 miles south of Reynolds Cemetery Road, when for unknown reasons, lost control of her vehicle striking the east guardrail. Following the initial impact with the guardrail, she overcorrected her steering causing the vehicle to go into a spin. The vehicle left the east side of the roadway, struck a culvert, and rolled. The passenger (Darryl G. Smith) was ejected from the vehicle.
Deana was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Saline County Coroner’s Office. Darryl was transported by LifeFlight to St. Mary’s Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased.
District 19 was assisted at the scene by the Saline County Sheriff’s Department, Carrier Mills Fire Department, Harrisburg Fire Department, Saline County EMS, Saline County Coroner’s Office, and Bishop’s Towing.
