Pike County – At 8:44 this morning, Indiana State Police arrested Angela Martin, 24, of Petersburg, in connection to the death of her two-month old son that occurred in December 2011.
Indiana State Police Detective Brad Chandler initiated a criminal investigation on December 12, after emergency personnel were dispatched to Martin’s residence located at 1314 North Kennedy Lane, Petersburg, for an unresponsive infant. When emergency personnel arrived they determined the infant, Eli Roos, had already passed away. Eli was located in a bedroom lying on an adult bed. During the investigation it was determined that between 10:30 and 11:00 on the night before, Martin prepared a bottle and placed Eli on his back between two pillows. Martin allegedly propped up his bottle so he could drink from it and went into another bedroom to sleep. Martin woke up the following morning between 7:00 and 8:00, but didn’t check on Eli until after 10:00 a.m. When she did check on Eli she found him unresponsive and called 911. Further investigation concluded that Martin failed to check on her son for approximately 11 hours.
Preliminary autopsy results list the cause of death as positional asphyxiation due to the propped bottle.
Martin is currently being held on a $25,000 bond in the Pike County Jail.
