Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office News Release:
The Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office has arrested an Evansville man following an investigation into the thefts of numerous airbags from two Vanderburgh County salvage yards. Douglas Eugene Hunsaker was arrested on a warrant for Burglary and Theft by sheriff's deputies and the U.S. marshals Task force.
Deputies took several reports of airbags being stolen from vehicles from two St Joseph Avenue salvage yards. During the subsequent investigation Hunsaker was found to be advertising airbags for sale online that matched those airbags taken from the salvage yards. Additional investigative work led to sufficient probable cause for the Vanderburgh County Sheriff's Office to apply for and obtain a warrant for Burglary and Theft.
Deputies and members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force arrested him without incident at his residence. A search warrant was served at his residence and airbags as well as other evidence were recovered. A large quantity of airbags were also recovered from a location in Henderson, KY and are believed to have been stolen by Hunsaker. The investigation is continuing and more charges may be filed.
Hunsaker has prior convictions for Burglary and Theft. An additional charge of being a Habitual Offender has been filed. He was later released upon posting a $1,000 bond.
